Plastic Free July – Our staff favorites and how to get involved!
June 18, 2018 (8 months ago)
Plastic free July is now upon us!
We are often asked what our must-haves are for reducing waste in the office, We have chosen some of our Staff favourites and we would love to hear from you about what steps you are taking this year to make your own home or office more plastic free!
The Plastic Free July campaign, now in its seventh year and a global movement, will kick off next month with the simple challenge for households to find new ways to reduce their plastic consumption.
“Virtually every piece of plastic ever manufactured still exists in some form today. Plastic, particularly single-use plastic or ‘throw-away’ plastic items, are not getting recycled effectively and are having a detrimental impact on our environment.” says Executive Director and Founder of the Plastic Free July Foundation, Rebecca Prince Ruiz
“With the big supermarkets moving to ban single-use plastic bags, there is no better time to turn universal awareness of plastic waste into universal action on single-use plastics. This July, our aim is to empower all households to choose to refuse and collectively contribute by making small changes to their day-to-day actions to make a big difference.”

Humble Brush – Bamboo Toothbrushes
One of the cheapest and easiest ways to get started is in the bathroom. Did you know that every plastic toothbrush ever sold is still around as they don’t break down!
In the United States alone it is estimated that over 850 million toothbrushes are discarded and end up in landfill every single year
In Australia, over 30 million toothbrushes are used and disposed of by Australians each year, amounting to approximately 1000 tonnes of landfill each year.
These toothbrushes are made from a combination of plastic (made from crude oil) and rubber for the hand piece, nylon for the bristles, and a mix of plastic and cardboard for the packaging. None of these items are biodegradable, therefore they remain in landfill indefinitely. They might even end up in our oceans and washed up on our beaches or consumed by marine life. If they are burnt, they release a combination of toxic and greenhouse gases.
Humble brush also give back, working with dental programmes around the world the profits go towards providing toothbrushes and oral care for underprivileged kids around the world!

To fit with the companies ethos “heart your insides, heart the earth”, the packaging was designed to be eco friendly – recyclable foil, soy based pantone inks, 100% recycled board – the result is a very rough, organic feel. The aim was to design packaging for the chocolate that drew the right people to it, but also to make people outside of their usual market want to try it purely because they loved the packaging. Now after a few years of trading Pana has cemented itself as a leader in chocolate, enjoyed by those looking for a raw, organic and earth friendly option as well as those who just love chocolate!
