How Top Feed your skin to keep it happy and Healthy

So how do we get happy healthy skin from the inside out?

The skin is the largest organ of the body and takes on the huge role of filtering toxins and protecting your insides from the environment every day. Many people invest large amounts of money and time in trying to find the perfect topical fix. These promise to to correct blemishes, moisturise the skin, dry out oily skin, reduce redness, reduce breakouts and perfect their overall appearance.

A great deal of time goes into morning regimes and then more effort at night to cleanse and remove the make up from the day. So how do you get happy healthy skin from the inside out?

As a Naturopath, I believe in nourishing your skin from within by eating nutritious, antioxidant rich and nutrient dense foods, which help to repair damaged skin and improve the overall health of the body. Once you start to “feed” your skin through a healthy diet and lifestyle, you will not need to work as much from the outside to make it appear naturally healthy.

There are a few things you can do, which will greatly improve skin health naturally keeping it beautiful from the inside out.
- Stay hydrated

Ensure your skin is hydrated from within by drinking a minimum of 8 cups of water per day. Tea is such a great way to ensure you keep drinking and remain hydrated. If 8 cups of plain water is difficult to achieve. Just try to keep these caffeine free if drinking for hydration.

- Detox your body

Toxicity within will be reflected by unhealthy looking skin and breakouts. By supporting our organs of elimination, we can help filter impurities and toxins from the body and ensure we reduce the workload for the skin.

- Feed your skin

Topical applications of creams, moisturizers and cleansers should be as natural and free from chemicals as possible. The products you apply topically will be absorbed into your skin and your blood. If you don't recognise it and wouldn't eat it, it should go on your skin.

- Nourishing nutrients

The most important nutrients to ensure optimum health of the skin includes essential fatty acids, antioxidants, fibre and whole foods. These foods are all nutrient dense and packed with compounds that offer support for the skin, which will help nourish, repair and moisturise your skin from within.

- Food as medicine

The following foods specifically support healthy, glowing skin: avocado, fish, nuts and seeds, kiwi fruit, lemon, broccoli, whole grains.

- Herbal medicine

Herbs, which can offer support for your skin, include Dandelion, Burdock, Calendula, Echinacea, and Red clover. These herbs aid detoxification and support the clearance of toxins from the liver. They also help in reducing inflammation and lessening the workload for the skin.
