There is a taste most of us have quietly accepted. You buy good coffee, pour it into your reusable cup, and somewhere on the commute it picks up a faint metallic or plastic edge the same coffee never has in a café. We have been trained to file this under "that is just what travel coffee tastes like." It is not. It is chemistry, and it is coming from the cup.

The chemistry

There is a second issue nobody photographs, and it has nothing to do with taste. Plastic and painted linings scratch. Every stir, every cycle through the dishwasher, every knock in your bag adds microscopic scratches. Not a toilet-seat scare — a material fact

Worth being precise here, because the internet loves a frightening number. You may have seen claims that reusable cups carry more bacteria than a toilet seat. Those headlines almost always trace back to cups that were rarely washed, and they say more about washing habits than about materials. The fair version of the hygiene point is simpler. A surface that cannot scratch and cannot absorb is easier to keep genuinely clean than one that can do both. That is a material fact about ceramic, not a comment on your housekeeping.
